Social media is one of the most powerful tools business owners have for advertising, marketing, and recruiting. LinkedIn’s network helps professionals connect with people in their industry and complementary industries. It is absolutely in your best interest to polish your LinkedIn profile. As people scroll through possible contacts, you have a very limited amount of time–maybe 30 seconds–to grab their attention.
Start with a professional photograph. It should be a recent shot. If you’re working on your company page, use a quality image of your company’s logo. Most importantly, write a snappy summary. As people scroll through search results, a good summary is what will attract them to click over to your full page. Use vivid language and describe specifically what you do. Do your best to make your company stand out from the competition. Emphasize what makes you unique. If you just tossed something up when you first joined, go back and polish your LinkedIn profile by carefully editing your summary.
Once your profile is in tip-top shape, it’s time to expand your network. Your updates should be interesting and generate discussion. If you put up an article relevant to your industry, add a little commentary or ask a question. Regularly posting videos, articles, or links to your work is a good way to generate interest in your page and create a useful resource for your community.
